Typhoon Morakot hit southern Taiwan on 8th August causing disastrous floods and landslides that left hundreds dead or missing. Many of those affected by the disaster are indigenous peoples living in the mountain areas. They fear that they may be forced to relocate from their traditional lands as a result of the reconstruction plan.
Indigenous people from the south of Taiwan affected by the disaster and other supporters protested against the reconstruction plan in Taipei. Civil society groups also raised their concerns about the reconstruction plan saying it gives too much power to the central government and fails to include local people affected by the disaster in consultations and committees.
