The ministry is in the city of Thessaloniki, in a building constructed in 1981 will be managed by Theodoros Karaoglu. According to Greek media the restoration of the ministry triggered positive reactions among Macedonians from Northern Greece.

The new Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, fulfilling his campaign promise announced the re-establishment of the Macedonia – Thrace Ministry. Theodoros Karaoglou, a native of Thessalonike, was appointed as the new Minister.

The re-establishment of the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace was welcomed with lot of positive feedback in Greece. The Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace is seen – especially among Macedonians – as a national jewel.

On 7 October 2009, the Ministry for Macedonia-Thrace has ceased, as no Minister of the new Government was placed in charge; instead, the Ministry was transformed into the General Secretariat for Macedonia and Thrace, and is under the administration of the Ministry of the Interior.
