Chen Shui-bian supporters gathered outside Taipei District Court, in Taiwan, as the former president Chen and his wife were found guilty of corruption, embezzlement and taking bribes. The pair were sentenced to life in prison on Sept 11 2009.
Although the verdict was widely expected, a few hundred diehard supporters came out to protest. Chen accused the court of political persecution done for purposes of pleasing China and his supporters said his anti-China policies played a key role in the prosecution.
The long-running case was seen as a test of Taiwan's young democracy. Since leaving office, relations between Taiwan and China have rapidly improved under president Ma Ying-jeou.
