On September 11th, Catalonia commemorates the defeat of the assault on the city of Barcelona by the troops of the Bourbon kings, under the command of the English Duke of Berwick (11 September 1714).
The people take to the streets to demonstrate their desire for independence, waving flags and showing cultural manifestations of Catalan folk (such as "els Castells' castles). The people also gather to eat together in the street, with big communal "paellas" serving the crowds.
The "fiesta" wants to encourage the sense of unity, stressing ancestral cultural values that make them feel a united people.
