Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s defense lawyers have criticized the state prosecution for politicizing the hearing of her cassation appeal.

"From the point of view of the law, there is only one ruling that the High Specialized Court can make and that is to overturn the previous ruling concerning Yulia Tymoshenko in the gas case, release Yulia Tymoshenko and close the case. But there is a good chance the decision will be political and will leave the previous rulings in force," said lawyer Mykola Siryi.
The lawyer also drew attention to the fact that the prosecutors went beyond the requirements of the Code of Criminal Procedure. "The essence of their argument was political assessments that the prosecution has no right making. What‘s more, in their assumptions, and the prosecution's arguments were based purely on assumption, they referred to documents that weren’t investigated as part of the case, which is expressly prohibited by the Constitution and Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine. The statements by the prosecution went beyond the law," he said.
"There is every reason for this case to be considered by the European Court of Human Rights. Furthermore, it’s already clear that this will be a landmark case and one that will attract the attention of the entire European community," he added.
