The Ministry of Education announced that from the 51,209 applicants for the public contest to hire teachers, only 7,600 were placed.
This represents a decrease of 5147 hired teachers compared to last year when, at this stage, 12,747 teachers entered the schools.
More than 43 thousand teachers will now seek possibilitties of work in extracurricular activities or study support.
According to the statement issued, the schools requested the placement of teachers for completing 12,114 hours of which 1,714 hours (complete and incomplete), remained unfilled.
"Like every year," the ministry indicates, these schedules "will now be reassessed by the schools so that they can supplement where necessary", with hours that result from retirements and illnesses that occur in the meantime.
Education is one of the most affected areas by unemployment in Portugal.
