Shortly after 9AM a man was seen walking along the edge of a rooftop of a building on Arundel Street. At approximately 11:10AM the man was seen jumping backwards off the building.
At first it was reported the man had died, but later it was confirmed the man was still alive and had been taken to Southampton General Hospital. One witness told me he had been waiting for the unemployment office to open when he looked up and saw a man on the edge of the building.
The eyewitness told me the man was known to a few of the onlookers.
As the situation developed the crowd was moved back and the cordon extended to the fountain area in the City centre.
Apparently a large crowd of approximately 200 people built and the witness said some onlookers told the man to jump.
The witness i spoke to also witnessed the man jump backwards off the building as police negotiators went towards him (to prevent him from jumping).
The reason for the man jumping from the building is currently unknown.
