Opening of the Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre (WOPEC) at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University. Cardiff, Wales, UK, 30/09/2009.
30th September 2009 Launch of WOPEC
Today was a landmark day for Cardiff University when the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at Cardiff officially launched the Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre (WOPEC). The University was proud to announce that WOPEC was believed to be the first government funded university facility to ensure continuing education and professional development for optometrists.
The Postgraduate Education Centre is housed within the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences Department and will have access to the latest high-tech equipment as well as the postgraduate researchers and their supervisors. This will result in very high quality teaching and ensure that future eyecare as practiced by optometrists in the principality will be of a very high standard.
The £21M building is a very futuristic design and has been used by several film companies as a film set.
Present at the opening were around 100 Alumni from all over Wales and they were given an opening address by Jane Hutt, Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning from the Welsh Assembly.
The Alumni and staff listened to her opening remarks. She told them that this was going to be a centre to be proud of and although it had been a long time in developing it was clearly going to make the optometric profession into one where the ongoing development of techniques and other clinical skills could be learnt and put into mainstream practice enhancing the quality of eyecare in Wales.
After her speech the optometrists undertook several lectures and practical sessions in the new centre and were very enthusiastic about the future for Post Graduate Education in Wales.
Later on in the afternoon the Grand Opening speeches were made by Tim Wess, head of the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University, followed by a speech by Dr David Grant the Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University.
This was followed by a speech by Mr Dick Roberts who then introduced the First Minister for Wales Mr Rhodri Morgan to the Alumni and staff.
Entertainment was provided by Cardiff International Academy of Voice who sang several songs and ended by singing a belated Happy Birthday in Welsh, to First Minister Rhodri Morgan who had actually celebrated his birthday on Tuesday.
All those who attended the event were enthusiastic about having a centralized centre for Welsh Post-Graduate Optometric Education.
