Smoky Mountain, at the northern end of the Manila harbour, is a postcard of global poverty. In 40-year-old mountain of garbage the locals literally live off the rubbish: they search it, burn it, separate it in plastic bags, recycle it, sell it to junk shops, even eat some of the remains. Smoky Mountain is a 40-year-old mountain of garbage. The locals literally live off it - they search it, burn it, separate it in plastic bags, recycle it, sell it to junk shops, even eat some of the remains” I visited Smoky Mountain in December 2005 and was both shocked by what I found but also felt a sense of hope because of the warmth I found in the people who live there. It has always saddened me that in this wondrous world, we in the west have so much while others have so little and we simply stand and watch or even worse, simply look away…
