Hundreds march in Glasgow city centre to stop a march by the 'Scottish Defence League". Glasgow, Scotland. 14/11/2009.
From the facebook page of the organisers:
KEEP THE FASCISTS OFF OUR STREETS
The English Defence League are a group of racist football hooligans who are trying to stir up trouble against ordinary Muslims living in Britain. This year the EDL have held several protests provoking disorder in different cities across the UK. They pretend that they are only protesting against Muslim extremism and are not racist, but in reality their protests have seen racist violence and open displays of fascism.
The EDL have earmarked Glasgow as their next location to cause havoc in - the only difference is this time, they're going to use the name 'Scottish' Defence League.
We, the ordinary people of Glasgow, have a long and honourable tradition of standing up against fascists and racists, ever since 65 ordinary Glaswegians died fighting in the International Brigade against fascism in Spain, 1936-1939.
We do not want the English Defence League bringing their hate and spewing their vile racism upon the streets of Glasgow.
We call upon everyone to oppose the racists of the EDL - stand together to confront the fascists!
Mass, militant action can prevent the 'Scottish Defence League' fascists from organising and assembling in Glasgow - join with hundreds of others and help us stop them on Saturday 14 November.
ASSEMBLE: 10am, outside St Enochs underground station.
* STAY SAFE: stick together and arrive in groups.
* BE AWARE that the police will be out in force in the city centre during the day - expect stop and searches, and don't carry anything illegal!
NB. The location of the SDL protest has yet to be revealed.
What we do know is that they shall be in Glasgow City Centre hours before the Scotland United demo even assembles at Nelsons Column.
We consider this event to be a feeder for the Scotland United march.
We would also like to stress that what is being called for is an entirely peaceful protest - many different groups will be present in Glasgow over the day, and a variety of actions will no doubt be taking place. The 10am St Enochs demo is not being set out on with any intention of violence.
