Organised under the headlines “en defensa de la dignidad laboral de los periodistas” (in defence of job dignity of journalists) the APM is afraid that more than 5000 jobs in the sector might be lost. The association wants to cooperate with the owners of the various media to try and save the industry and the profession. The 150 crowd were addressed by the President of the Asociación de la Prensa de Madrid (APM) Fernando González Urbaneja who emphasised that good journalism is based on the diligent search of the truth. This situation is deteriorating the quality of journalism compromising and complicating its future. The President of the Federación de Asociaciones de Periodistas de España (FAPE), Magis Iglesias, who also addressed the meeting claimed that, “We (journalists) are a species on the way to extinction.” The point was made that once the economic crisis is over, will there be any journalists left. At the end of the meeting Urbaneja made an emotion reference to the little girl hold the placard: Dame Un Motivo Para Ser Periodista. (Give me a reason to be a journalist)
