Climate Justice Action demonstrates at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen to protest against ineffective and unjust 'solutions' to climate change. Copenhagen, Denmark. 16/12/09
CJA are supported by global people's movements as well as delegates inside the centre who attemptED to join us but were prevented from doing so by the police. After experiencing police intimidation and violence including pepper spray and arrests of non-violent protesters - the demonstrators secured an area and a 'People's Climate Summit' outside the Bella Centre gates. In this space, speakers made presentations and a horizontal working group process took place where small groups discussed solutions to climate change and addressed social and political problems.
Several activists braved the river to make it to the Bella Centre and were greeted with more pepper spray and instant arrests.
Meanwhile inside the centre, the talks remain in deadlock as the chair of the conference Connie Hedegaard resigns.
The purpose of this demonstration was to highlight problems with current climate change negotiations. Emissions trading does not work to reduce actual emissions and places an unfair burden on third world countries.
