SME's Christmas Party

The Mexican Electricians Union (SME) held their Christmas Party today in Reforma Ave. Musical performances, wrestling, gifts for children and a traditional Mexican "pastorela" were among the attractions. There was also a raffle of turkeys for Christmas dinner, as a means of helping to support workers. Mexico City, Mexico. 23/12/2009.

On December 23rd, workers from the Mexican Electricians Union held a Christmas party on Reforma Ave., one of the most important in Mexico City. Together with their families, electricians gathered to show the government that they do not want that clearance but keep his job, which was taken from them illegally with the unfounded decree that extinguished the company Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC) on 11 October.
The event was held in front of the largest Christmas tree in the world, placed by a transnational corporation of soft drinks in the city. Electricians thought, if it have the Guinness record for being the largest Christmas tree, would also witnessing the "Guinness record unemployment" which has the Mexican government.
Musical performances, wrestling, gifts for children and a traditional Mexican "pastorela" were among the attractions. There was a raffle of turkeys for Christmas dinner, as a means of support workers. It should be noted that despite the union remains in place, and contrary to the laws, the Mexican government has refused to pay the bonuses and salary arrears of workers.
One worker said the main reason for which they are resisting the union is by their families, their children, and for the dignity that has characterized electricians. The union's general secretary, Martin Esparza, urged workers not to submit and continue the fight against illegal decree in support of their families. He said the union is still alive, that the federal government can not defeat them, and called for launching the nationwide strike in February next year. He emphasized the request of the resignation of Javier Lozano, Federal Labor secretary, who "does not represent the interests of workers" from Mexico.
The Christmas party was organized thinking, especially, in the children of workers. They all shared food and punch, traditional Mexican drink made with fruit.

El 23 de diciembre, los trabajadores del Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas realizaron una fiesta de navidad sobre la Avenida Reforma, unas de las más importantes de la ciudad de México. Junto con sus familias, los electricistas se dieron cita para demostrar al gobierno que ellos no quieren su liquidación sino mantener su empleo, el cual les fue arrebatado ilegalmente con el decreto infundado que extinguió a la compañía de Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC), el pasado 11 de octubre.
El evento se realizó frente al árbol de navidad más grande del mundo, colocado por una empresa transnacional de refrescos en la ciudad. Los electricistas pensaron que, al tener el record Guiness por ser el árbol navideño más grande, debía también ser testigo del “record guiness de desempleo” que tiene el gobierno mexicano.
Presentaciones musicales, lucha libre, regalos para los niños y una tradicional “pastorela” fueron algunas de las atracciones. Se hizo una rifa de pavos para la cena navidad, como una forma de apoyar a los trabajadores. Cabe señalar que a pesar de que el sindicato sigue vigente, y contraviniendo las disposiciones legales, el gobierno mexicano ha negado pagar los aguinaldos y sueldos atrasados de los trabajadores.
Un trabajador declaró que el motivo principal por el cual se encuentran resistiendo los sindicalizados es por sus familias, por sus hijos, y por la dignidad que ha caracterizado a los electricistas. El secretario general del sindicato, Martín Esparza, exhortó a los trabajadores a no doblegarse y a continuar en la lucha contra el ilegal decreto, con el apoyo de sus familias. Dijo que el sindicato sigue vivo, que el gobierno federal no podrá derrotarlo, e hizo un llamado para lanzar la huelga nacional en febrero del año próximo. Hizo hincapié en solicitar la renuncia de Javier Lozano, secretario federal del trabajo, quien “no representa los intereses de los trabajadores” de México.
La fiesta navideña se organizó pensando, principalmente, en los hijos de los trabajadores. Todos compartieron comida y ponche.
