Police motorcyclists attacked

A mob of protesters surround and then attack Iranian police motorcyclists. The motorcycles were then burnt and the police were heckled by the protesters some wearing the trademark green ribbons of the opposition. Iranian protestors have taken to the streets once again and have been engaged in street battles with police. 27/12/09.

Over the year the Iranian authorities have been cracking down on opposition rallies to oust incidents such as this one. The 10th day of Muharram falling on the 27th December 2009 is the Day of Grief or also known as the Day of Martyrdom for Shia Muslims.

Iranian authorities warned against political gatherings in fear that they could spark fierce battles between protesters and the police.

Today large numbers of people gathered at the Imam Hussein Square to Enqelab and Azadi. Riot police fired tear gas into the crowd while some of the protesters were engaged in street battles with the police.

Crowds chanted: “Death to Khamenei”, “This month is the month of Blood, Yazid will be overthrown”. Referring to Yazid, the leader of the Umayyid forces in 680 AD who killed the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammed.
