The President from 1969-1974 and again from 1994-1999 Rafael Caldera was the founding member of the Christian Democratic Party and one of the main figures in the countries democratic system. During his second term in power he gave a presidential pardon to Hugo Chavez who then went on to succeed him in a bloodless coup. He signed many treaties of pacification during his first term in power, one of them was them was to recognise the left wing parties such as the Communist Party of Venezuela.

During his second term as president he faced an economic crisis due to the low income generated from oil sales to the U.S which triggered the 1992 coup attempt by the MVR under the leadership of Hugo Chavez.

He died on 24 December 2009 and was laid to rest on 26 December 2009.
