Only introduced during it's Communist period, the New Year's holiday has become a major event in Mongolia, and especially in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city. Many people gather in Sukhbaatar Square in the center of the city to view or shoot off fireworks themselves. Others attend parties like the one at the Sky Lounge, one of the city's newest and most upscale clubs. Located on the 17th floor of a building which also houses Ulaanbaatar's new Louis Vuitton store and overlooks the city's main avenue, the Sky Lounge held a New Year's party that included musical performers, dancing, and champagne for a $25 cover charge.
