January 15, 2010 was the last day for Ukrainian presidential hopefuls to campaign before the election on the 17th. Victor Yanukovych, who has a strong lead in the polls, held a concert in front of the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev. Thousands of mostly young supporters gathered for the concert at which Yanukovych made his final campaign speech before the election. Earlier in the day, campaign volunteers for the incumbent President, Victor Yushchenko, were taking down posters throughout the city in perhaps a symbolic capitulation to his single digit poll numbers. Yushchenko was swept to power in the 2004 Orange Revolution when his rival Yanukovych was accused of mass voter fraud. The closing concert to Yanukovych’s campaign had originally been scheduled in Independence Square, the sight of the Orange Revolution protests, however the Kiev City Administration recently banned all political demonstrations in the central square.
