Ioan Zinici is a fourth generation Easter egg painter from Izvoarele Sucevei, Romania. Zinici was demonstrating his craft at the FITUR 2010tourist fair, Madrid, on the 23 January 2010.

Easter egg painting is a tradition in Romania and the craft is passed on from one generation to the next. Usually from father to son.

An egg takes about three hours to paint with home made paint which includes honey and pigment. Apart from hens’ eggs Zinici also paints duck, goose and ostrich eggs.

These eggs with intricate designs are done as decoration. However, eggs with basic single colours are usually given to children during Easter for them to play with. A child has to try and break the egg of their opponent and if they success the opponent has to eat the content, which is, of course, a hard boiled egg.
