Thousands of people took to the streets to protest against government economic policies in the first major demonstration of the year. The so-called "March against famine and unemployment," was conducted in an extremely difficult context for Mexican society. While the national economy declines, the cost of energy and various basic necessities have increased. Mexico City, Mexico. 29/01/2010.

On Friday 29 January, held a massive demonstration in Mexico City. The so-called "March against famine and unemployment," was conducted in an extremely difficult context for Mexican society. While the national economy declines, the costs for energy and various products of the basic basket has increased. The minimum wage increased $ 2.56 pesos (about 30 cents), while the unemployment rate reached alarming levels.

Several unions, indigenous and social organizations, gathered at the Angel of Independence to protest against the economic and social policy of the government headed by Felipe Calderón.

Tens of thousands of people walked along Avenida Reforma until the Zocalo of the capital. There, the telephone union leaders, Francisco Hernandez Juarez (also deputy); Workers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico union, Agustin Rodriguez; of the National Peasant Confederation, Cruz López Aguilar; from the Mexican Union of Electricians, Martin Esparza , and Section XXII of the teachers of Oaxaca, Azael Santiago Chepi, came out for a new "class" deal to transform the country. They also agreed on the need to carry out the nationwide strike.

Lopez Aguilar, leader of the CNC and federal deputy, criticized the Mexican government for not protecting the country's economy, especially agriculture and livestock sector. Recently, the federal government allowed the planting of 3 types of GM maize in the country, which would affect many domestic farmers. Moreover, the government headed by Felipe Calderón has not invested the $ 300 million promised in 2007, in order to implement the law on the Promotion and Development of Energy, wich supposely provides support to the Mexican countryside to through crop diversification. Of the 300 million that Calderon promised, have surrendered only 17 and the rest has been used in programs for electoral purposes.

Agustin Rodriguez and Hernandez Juarez agreed that labor and economic policies of this administration have failed, so we need a change in the country. Martin Esparza called for the resignation of Felipe Calderón because of his "inability" to run the country. He accused him of attacking the union by determinate the extinction of the company Luz y Fuerza del Centro, and remove 44 thousand workers from their source of employment.

At the end of the rally, other organizations installed a camp in the Zocalo to "pressure" on the federal government.
