Street prostitution in Bangkok. A growth sector in the already lucrative sex industry and a side of the industry that has grown at an alarming rate over the last few years. Spurred on by large cuts in the work forces at many of the huge factories on the outskirts of the city.
Many people associate Bangkok with the glare of red neon lights, and a sex industry unrivalled in its size or reputation. What most people do not realize, is that Prostitution is in fact illegal. However it goes on unhindered in many areas of the city, and takes many forms. From the high end hostess and Karaoke bars, to the very poor and seedy roadside shack bars with the twinkling xmas-like lights.
Another lesser known side to the sex industry in Bangkok, are the Street walkers, or freelancers. A side of the industry that has grown at an alarming rate over the last few years.
At night this area of Sukhumvit road sees scores of ladies hanging out on the pavement looking for customers. It is often an intimidating and shocking sight for many visiting tourists and their children. And even during the daylight hours, many girls can be found loitering around the area.
Unlike their counterparts in the Bars and Clubs, these girls have no back up. No protection from bad customers, and the customers themselves have no guarantees either. Many are drug addicts, and it is reported that some are HIV+. A bad sign for the city, which has been something of an Aids success story, in terms of battling the disease, over the last 20 years.
A sign of the times.......
