President Mahinda Rajapaksa was conferred the Doctorate Honoris Causa by the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia for his contribution to world peace in defeating terrorism and for his distinguished service to education and development.
Sri Lanka's defeated opposition presidential candidate 59-year-old retired four-star general Sarath Fonseka and his media secretary Senaka de Silva were arrested on Monday (08th Feb) night while they were at work in their office in the capital, Colombo by the military police.
Fonseka was the opposition common candidate for the Presidential Election who challenged to President Mahinda Rajapakse last 26th January. President Rajapakse won the Presidential election easily but Fonseka vowed to challenge the result in the Supreme Court.
Soon after his defeat in the January 26 polls, the Sri Lankan Government had alleged that Gen Fonseka had tried to assassinate Rajapaksa and his family, a charge which was denied by the former army chief. The arrest comes in the wake of reports that Fonseka could face a military court on charges of conspiring to overthrow the government and plotting to kill Rajapaksa.
The United States on Monday voiced concern about Sri Lanka's arrest of the defeated opposition presidential candidate, fearing it would worsen divisions as the island recovers from war.
