At least 14 children were killed after a fire broke out overnight in a private school hostel in the Kurung Kumay district in Arunachal Pradesh, India. 11/02/2010.

According to official sources, about 60 students were sleeping when the blaze, which spread from an oil lamp, gutted the hostel made of bamboo and straw in Palin town, about 260 km (161 miles) north of state capital Itanagar.

'Six others are in a serious condition,' Tsaring an EAC said over the telephone.

He said that by the time the children woke up, the fire had already engulfed some of the rooms. Local residents rescued 40 children.The injured were shifted to the hospital. Arunachal CM Dorjee Khandu will visit the children at the hospital, along with State Education minister on Friday Morning.

Meanwhile  Arunachal Pradesh student Union and the MP of east Arunachal, Takam Sanjoy have expressed their condolences.
