In a joint collaboration between Oman and Singapore, a group will sail the Jewel of Muscat on a historical 3,000 mile voyage along a trade route to Singapore starting February 16th 2010. The ship or dhow is recreation made using materials and methods only available to 9th-century Arab ship builders. Al-bustan muscat, Oman. 15/02/2010.
The 18.5 meter long ship made entirely of wood and ropes contains no nails. Where the massive wood planks come together ropes made from strands of coconut fibres are sewn in then lathered with goat fat to make the Jewel of Muscat water tight. The 3,000 mile voyage will be captained by Salah al-Jabri and a crew of seventeen men. The Jewel of Muscat is planed to glide into Singapore in June 2010.
