Scenes from the 2010 Tokyo Marathon which was held on Feb. 28, 2010.
Starting at 9:10 AM in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan government building in Shinjuku, the 42.195 kilometer race took participants through many of Tokyo's major shopping and tourist areas before finishing at Tokyo Big Sight, an international exhibition center located in Ariake.
Organizers registered 35,000 runners and wheelchair athletes to take part in both the marathon and a 10 kilometer race which was held concurrently. According to the national broadcaster NHK, participants were chosen by lottery out of a total of 310,000 applications, and ultimately 94.5% of entrants completed the race within the 7-hour time limit.
Unfortunately, weather conditions were difficult, with cool temperatures and heavy rain for most of the morning. The sun did come out later in the day, however. Despite the early bad weather, many people lined the route to shout encouragement to the participants, with some handing out cookies and candies.
More than 108 million yen in prize money was available this year, with the first place finisher taking home eight million yen. According to organizers, participants from 78 countries joined the race, including 893 from the United States.
