Around 100 people gathered at Newcastle Draw Dock in East London on Tuesday for the 2010 edition of Deep Clean, organised by Thames21, a waterways charity. The tide of the River Thames was on a five year low on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Deep Clean took place in four different locations in West and East London. Boots, spades and bags are provided by the organiser.
The low tide revealed large amounts of litter, most of which were plastic bags and bottles.
According to a spokesman of the charity organization, 250 000 plastic bags have been collected in the Thames in the last ten years.
The litter picked up by volunteers will be collected by the Port of London Authority.
