Athens, Greece. 05/03/2010.
Up to 7000 people went down Friday morning in the streets of the Greek capital, claiming their anger towards the new austerity plans decided by the prime minister G. Papandreou.
The protest comes two days after the Socialist government announced painful new austerity measures worth euro4.8 billion ($6.5 billion), including cutting civil service salaries and bonuses, freezing pensions and hiking taxes. The measures come on top of an earlier austerity plan announced in January but that failed to convince jittery markets.
The Prime Minister said Tuesday that the measures were “not taken out of choice but out of necessity”
PAME trade union confederation opened the march around 10.30 this morning on Syntagma square and fast other left-wing political parties joined the march.
Later on some clashes between protesters and police forces occurred around the parliament and the old university on Panepistimiou Avenue, at least five people got arrested and seven police officers were injured during the clashes.
It was the biggest outburst of violence since Greece’s debt crisis escalated late last year.
