The counter-demonstration by several hundred anti-Fascists managed to disrupt, a small but vocal march by the English Defence League [EDL]. The EDL who target “Muslim extremists” living in Britain, consists predominantly of young white males, from Britain’s lamentable football hooligan culture. Taking their lead from liberal Islamaphobes, EDL’s demands include the banning of the burqa, a garment rarely worn in Britain; and the closure of the East London Mosque, a centre used by thousands of Muslims from many different traditions.
The anti-fascist Unite Against Fascism managed to sit down in the road for over an hour, before the 'defenders of the English' were shepherded through, flanked by police horses and vans, screaming obscenities at bemused tourists and anti-Fascists alike.
