Around 50 people gathered opposite the Chinese embassy on Portland Place demanding a free Tibet after 60 years of occupation and continuous persecution of the people. The day marks the 51st anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising. London, United Kingdom. 10/03/2010.
On March 10th 1959, thousands of Tibetans took to the streets and surrounded Norbulingka Palace, the summer residence of the Dalai Lama, to protect their leader and demand that the Chinese troops leave Tibet. Although government leaders ordered the crowd to disperse, the people intensified their protest. In turn the Chinese responded with fatal force bringing about a full scale uprising in the streets of the capital, Lhasa.
Since 1959 the Chinese government has done all it can to divide the Tibetan people and convince the international community that the majority of the Tibetan populous are happy under Chinese rule. This is certainly not the case - recently in March 2008 protest broke out across all three provinces of historical Tibet. A wide section of the society including monks, nuns, farmers, professionals and students took to the streets risking everything to show their anger at the situation and demand change.
