Tibetan refugees in Kathmandu protest against Chinese rule in Tibet, to mark the 51st anniversary of their failed uprising on March 10, 1959. As a direct result of the failed rebellion against Chinese occupation, the 14th Dalai Lama was forced to escape to India, and some 80,000 Tibetans fled their homeland for fear of persecution. More than 140,000 Tibetans now live as refugees across the world, with little hope of returning home. Kathmandu, Nepal. 10/03/2010.
In Kathmandu, hundreds of Tibetan refugees circled Boudha stupa shouting anti-Chinese slogans and clashing briefly with Nepali security forces. In the afternoon, a group of Tibetans tried to demonstrate in front of the Chinese Embassy but were waylaid and arrested by Nepali police. Tibetan unrest in Kathmandu has met with violent crackdowns in the recent years, as Nepal woos China on the diplomatic front.

@Lita: no worries, we all get
@Lita: no worries, we all get geographically disoriented sometimes ;) About the use of excessive force... I must say that Nepal has changed drastically over the last decade and post-civil war Nepal can be a rather violent place. But I get the feeling that Nepali security forces are MORE inclined to use force against Tibetans, for 2 reasons. One, Tibetan refugees have no citizenship rights. Two, the Nepalese are eager to please their Chinese neighbors. And like u mentioned about Burma - diplomacy is all about dollars and cents, at the end of it.
pics really good some great
pics really good some great angles and the helmet shot is superb
Sorry, Kathmandu in Nepal.
Sorry, Kathmandu in Nepal. Would one assume then that they are less inclined to use excessive force? Also, northern Burma is being slowly taken over by China, the influence is strong there too. Oil and offshore gas reserves in Burma...the local people resent this; however, they say (locals) China does provide some stability according to news sources.
One of the best coverage !!
One of the best coverage !! reflection pic is great !! Congrats!!
Hi Lita, the security forces
Hi Lita, the security forces are made up of only Nepali nationals - no Chinese nationals were involved. Since this took place in Nepal, it was up to the Nepalese to deal with it. The Chinese have a big influence over Nepal nowadays, and they don't need lift one finger to put down any anti-Chinese protests.
Terrific pics, nicely
Terrific pics, nicely written. Realizing that the security are the Chinese, do other groups make up the security forces or are they only composed of Chinese nationals?
