Thousands of Greeks take to the streets over the government's latest austerity measures, on a day which the third general strike in a month brings public services and transport to a halt. Thessaloniki, Greece. 11/03/2010.
Around 10.000 people, in two separate demonstrations, took the streets in Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, on March 11'th 2010, in protest over goverments latest harsh austerity measures aimed to solve country's huge dept crisis, on a day which the general strike announced by the two major trade unions, GSEE and ADEDY, brought most of country to halt, with most of transport grounded, and most of public services, schoolds and hospitals closed.
The demonstration in Thessaloniki was mainly peacefull, with some clashes though occuring between the riot police and a group of protesters, near the Venizelos statue. Also earlier in the demonstration a large street box was put on fire by a protester. The fire was put out seconds later with a fire extinguisher brought by a shopkeeper.
A similar, and larger demonstration was also held today in the capital Athens.
