I find a [Nikon] 35mm F1.8
I find a [Nikon] 35mm F1.8 useful at night or a 60mm f2.8 depending on what I am doing. But then there is usually a bit more light, I can change lenses and no one is going to shoot at me :-)
BTw how did you get an assignment in Afghanistan in the first place? and why are you posting here rather than anywhere else?
This was through a 24-70
This was through a 24-70 f/2.8, forget changing lenses out there, the moondust gets everywhere. 28 or 35 prime would do well, just didn't have one for my Canon system.
Hi, My thoughts exactly...
Hi, My thoughts exactly... Yesterday I wrote to some one else that a fast prime at 1.8 or 1.4 has a very shallow DoF and you will have to focus in the dark. It's likely 90% of pictures will have the main subject out of focus. Also which prime? Unless you can silently change lenses (in a dusty environment) in under 10 seconds you are likely to find yourself on your own in the dark. Changing lenses is not a good idea in this situation. As I said before these are amazing pictures that would have not even have been possible 10 years ago.... maybe not even 5 years ago.
Yeh, faster prime, only drama
Yeh, faster prime, only drama is focusing in such low light, it sort of becomes guesswork. Looking for a cateyes focusing screen to assist, can't find one for a 5D though. http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/cat--Canon-DSLRs--cat_canon.html
it was friendly advise and
it was friendly advise and opinion not criticise sorry if i offended. Maybe a prime with faster f number would help
I was thinking that these
I was thinking that these "dark" pictures would have been completely impossible only 10 years ago. Also you don't get to do artistic direction..... "You stand under this light and pose! :-)) This is outstanding work as most units won't take a civilian on a night patrol.
Cheers. A moving foot patrol
Cheers. A moving foot patrol at f/2.4 and ISO 25,600 with a half moon and lots of noise reduction post processing... pushing the limits really. Other options, a faster lens or IR film and flash.
I agree some are a little
I agree some are a little dark... perhaps use flash or studio lights whilst out on night patrol :-)))) . As a former soldier I think the pictures are amazing. It is clear you have the trust of the soldiers.
Tonight I am out with the local police in the UK ... less chance of being shot at.... well I hope so.
Atmospheric and nice photos
Atmospheric and nice photos even if some are a little dark
