The fifth annual Chiditarod was run on Chicago's near Northwest side on Saturday afternoon, March 6, 2010. Inspired by and scheduled to coincide with the Alaskan Iditarod dog sled race, the Chiditarod is an urban race run with shopping carts pulled by teams of five people. The Chiditarod is part costume party, part pub crawl and part charitable food drive. Each team competes with other teams in donning outlandish costumes and decorating their carts in imaginative fashion. During the race, each team must stop for at least 20 minutes at five designated taverns. When they finally cross the finish line, each cart must contain at least 40 pounds of donated food. Afterward prizes are awarded in various categories, including most food collected, fastest finish and most creative outfits. This year 100 carts participated in this unique opportunity for fun and socializing.
