The Acción Manta Blanca, which represents immigrants who work as street hawkers, today organised a protest in Madrid against severe street hawking laws. The protestors object to the introduction of possible prison sentences for selling pirated copies of CDs, DVDs and labelled goods which mainly affect immigrants without other sources of income. Madrid, Spain. 13/03/2010.
The protestors, who formed a line of symbolic street hawkers from Callao to Sol, claim that not only are there other laws that can deal with the selling of pirated goods, but that the Top Manta people should not be prosecuted anyway since this is their only income. Top Manta literally means “(goods) on top of white sheet/blanket.”
Organisations supporting today’s action included those that represent artists, lawyers and groups representing illegal immigrants. A number of artist were present during the protest, including Alberto San Juan (squatting with red scarf), Willie Toldeo (squatting with beard) and Sandra Collantes (with white dog).
