Kalya is a kibbutz and an Israeli settlement on the northern shore of the Dead Sea in the West Bank, next to the Palestinian city of Jericho. Following Israel's capture of the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day War, Kalya was re-established as a paramilitary Nahal settlement in 1968, the first in the area. Civilians temporarily settled in the deserted Jordanian army camp in 1972 while planting the first date trees and building their permanent settlement houses. They moved to their permanent houses in 1974. Now in the area, rounded by a border-fence and protected by IDF, there are some touristic centers and a kibbutz. Many Palestinians work there without employment contract and insurance. Every years tourists from all over the world come here to experience the unusual buoyancy caused by high salinity.
