In 1952 Mother Teresa opened the first Home for the Dying in a space made available by the City of Kolkata. With the help of Indian officials she converted an abandoned Hindu temple into the Kalighat Home for the Dying people, a free hospice for the poor. She renamed it Kalighat, the Home of the Pure Heart (Nirmal Hriday). It is in the heart of the slums, and next door to the temple to the goddess Kali, the destroyer. The patients in the female and male wards are very poor, many of them never having known any home other than a few square feet of pavement. Some volunteers work there and help the sisters. The most common diseases are tuberculosis, malnutrition and leprosy. All the patients are just numbers. Many of them are going to die soon, some others will go back to live in the street and nothing change in their life. Kolkata, State of West Bengal, India. 11/02/2009.
