6 april 2009, 3.32 am. A strong earthquake struck an ancient city in the central of Italy: L'Aquila. 308 people died due to collapse of houses and was the most devastating earthquakes in recent years.
This report describes this earthquake from the viewpoint of scientists of INGV, the Italian National institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The INGV, formed in 1999, collect and harness the expertise and resources of five schools already operating within the disciplines Geophysics and Volcanology: the National Institute of Geophysics, the Vesuvius Observatory, L 'International Institute of Volcanology, Geochemistry Institute of Fluid, the Institute for Research on Seismic Risk.
This story starts from the Seismic monitoring room of the INGV where the seismographs recorded the earthquake and where two scientists sounded the alarm.
After identifying the source of the earthquake, Antonio Piersanti, director of the department of Seismology, coordinating studies and calculations of data collected.
At the same time, a team of geologists and seismologists went to the epicenter of the earthquake in a short time, to observe the effects of the earthquake on the population and territory.
Today, one year after, INGV scientists continue to monitor the earth, trying to create useful models to forecast future earthquakes.
