The hospital of the Italian NGO 'Emergency' in Lashkargah, Afghanistan

Police in the Helmand province of Afghanistan have arrested three Italian aid workers for the NGO Emergency.
The three, Marco Garatti, Matteo Dell'Aira and Matteo Pagani, have been accused of being in league with the Talibans for allegedly plotting to assassinate the provincial governor Gulab Mangal. Apparently, the Afghan secret police acted on a tip-off, and say that they recovered weapons and explosive inside a storeroom of the hospital. That and many other shameful accusations have been spread through the international press by the Helmand Governor’s office. The founder of the Italian NGO Emergency, Gino Strada, labelled as “grotesque” the accusations and added that: “They want to get rid of a troublesome witness. Emergency shows the results of the so-called war on terrorism: 40 per cent of the wounded are children under the age of 14. We had asked for a humanitarian corridor to evacuate the wounded [during the operation Moshtarak in Marjah, South of Lashkargah] but they put up a security cordon that does not let them reach hospitals”.
