Various sounds greet you as you move around the Brajeshwari Temple at Kangra, a small hill town in North India. The sounds of prayers come from all directions, some as low as whispers, some loud invocations of devotees from far flung areas. The bells ring every now and then as yet another worshiper steps into the line.
But the sounds that have the tallest claims over the music of the temple are probably those that have been singing from generations. In the corridors of the shrine one sees different musicians playing instruments ranging from flute to drums.
All the sounds come together weaving a fresh story that wanders in the wind.
Uttam Puri's story is the uniquest among them all. He hails from a family of religious musicians. He sits alone at the temple with a bowl in front of him and a 'dafli' in hand. Puri lost his eyesight more than a decade ago due to an attack by honey bees. Puri's wish: to "see" the Durgiana Temple in Amritsar.
