The 2010 race for Colombia's presidency has so far been driven by the polls and media positioning. Petro is the clear winner of the several debates in Colombia election but he just has one digital in opinion polls.

He was a rebel in the now demobilized M-19 guerrilla movement. Following his demobilization, Petro went on win a seat in the Colombian House of Representatives 1991 and 2002 and later in the Senate (2006-2010)

Senator Petro has vehemently opposed to the government of Álvaro Uribe Vélez, denouncing various actions of the government. Petro has denounced in many occasions death threats against his life and of his family members as well as persecution by government-run security organizations.
