The Bieszczady mountains are the wildest mountain range in Central Europe. Tucked away in the extreme southeastern part of Poland, they offer unspoiled nature and splendid vistas. They are peppered with distinctive wooden Greek Orthodox churches, giving the area a distincly eastern, not a Polish ambiance. Before the last war the area was predominantly inhabited by the Ukrainians, who were expelled in the wake of their rebellion against the Polish government in 1947. The new Polish- Soviet border cut the region, further contributing to the marginalization of the region. The area has th lowest population density in Poland, only some 5-10 inhab./km2 while the Polish average is 124 inhab./ km2/ and is known as the "Polish Vermont." The green hills and endless, thickly forested valleys indeed make such an allusion come naturally. Recent years have seen the development of some tourist infrastructure such as ski lifts and hotels, but on the whole the region remains as wild as ever, waiting to be discovered by You.
