Scantily clad, fast women, who like to play rough, and always use protection. That pretty much describes women's roller derby. The sport is experiencing a tremendous rise in popularity in the US, fueled in part by the 2009 film Whip it starring Drew Barrymore.

Teams of 5 women (4 blockers and 1 Jammer) compete in this league on an oval shaped flat track. Points are scored when a team's Jammer passes (laps) the opposing team's Blockers. The bout provides some lively action with lots of pushing, shoving, and grabbing as the players speed around the track. Screaming fans, encouraged by enthusiastic cheerleaders, and energetic announcers make for a non stop deafening roar in the gymnasium at Hunter College.

This month's bout on May 1st between the reigning 2009 championship team, the Bronx Gridlock, vs the Brooklyn Bombshells was the 2010 season's home opener for the league. The defending champs trounced their competitors with a score of 145-52.
