Located in San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America, “Panchimalco” is a small town known for its colorful and religious indigenous festivities. Yesterday, may the 9th, they celebrated The Flower and Frond Fair in honor to the Virgin Mary.
Early morning at the Cofradías or Co-fraternities, children and adults, start arranging the Fronds with the Flowers, to be ready for the procession in the middle afternoon.
During the procession people carry their own Fronds with Flowers and walk all around the town. All the way there is a dance performed by the “Historiantes” or Historians, group of dancers who lead the procession. They dance and run with the machete, recreating the Dance of the Moors and Christians which is an odd vestige of a tradition brought over by the Spaniards. The real Historiantes Group is formed by adults, but there are also a group of children that perform the dance too, as a cultural heritage from his parents.
After the procession they celebrate mass at church.
