Landslide leaves 34 families homeless in Kenya

A total of 34 families have been left homeless in Mahiga village in Mathira East, Central Province, Kenya following a series of landslides due to the ongoing heavy rains in the area.

This is the second largest landslide in the area after another one hit the neighbouring Mukurweini district killing two family members.

The government issued a warning to the local residents two weeks ago to vacate their homes and move to higher grounds but many have ignored the warning.

Coffee farms in the hilly village have been swept away and homes have sunk as the ground becomes wet and unstable.

The region which is around Mt Kenya has been inundated by mudslides and landslides. Two people have lost their lives in the disaster, so far.
