In April 2010, university management proposed the closure of Middlesex University's Philosophy department, which is world-renowned for the high standard of its research.

Students began protesting the closure immediately; there have been two occupations of university space in the past several weeks, and a number of students and staff have been suspended pending disciplinary action. Today, students gathered at the Hendon Campus, north London, to rally outside the proposed location of the disciplinary hearings. At time of press, protesters have erected tents and a marquee on grass outside the main building, where they plan to remain.
