33000 teachers in Quebec affiliated with the FAE (Fédération Autonome de l'Enseignement) went on stricke on Tuesday.

On April the 14th, Jean Charest's cabinet announced a restructuring plan that entails budget cut on social welfare which would increase the already degrading teaching conditions.

Several thousands teachers from all over the province came downtown Montreal to demonstrate in front of Quebec's Prime Minister's office. Despite the heavy showers that poured down from time to time, the demonstration went on for hours and caused massive traffic jams. Most of the spectators seemed to support this action though.

However, the minister of Education, Michelle Courchesne, declared that the stricke would not have any effect on the dialogue process - or the lack of it.

On the other hand, the FAE warns that the movement may continue until next Fall and would thus cause severe disruptions.
