Soccer fans took to the streets of Santiago, Chile to celebrate their soccer team's victory in their first 2010 World Cup match against Honduras. Painted faces, flying flags, shouted slogans and honking cars filled the scene. Thousands gathered at Plaza Italia, a popular place to gather for celebrations, including some of the most unruly hooligans.

Riot police were present and took action when the large mass of people failed to disperse and continued to block traffic around Plaza Baquedano, a major traffic artery near downtown Santiago. When soccer hooligans began defying police by throwing rocks and glass bottles, security forces responded with truck-mounted water cannons and teargas-spraying jeeps to control the crowds. The press huddled in the protected area around the statue to avoid getting hosed.

A half hour later, the streets around the plaza were almost vacant, filled only with streamers, paper ribbons and other garbage.
