Sri Lankan Airlines is bringing one of the world’s most glamorous and highly rated surfing events to Sri Lanka, part of the airline’s multi-faceted strategy to position the island as one of the world’s most sought after travel destinations.
The ‘Sri Lankan Airlines Pro 2010’ tournament will draw some of the top stars in the surfing world to Arugam Bay, some 210kms east of capital Colombo, from the 18th -24th June. 128 world class competitors will take part, with representatives from Australia, USA, Germany, Portugal, Costa Rica, Ireland, Italy, Indonesia, Hawaii, South Africa, Great Britain, Japan, Puerto Rico, France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, New Zealand and Tahiti has increased the attractiveness of the event.
Sri Lankan Airlines Pro 2010 is an important event for professional surfers, since it has the highest rating of ‘Six Stars’ on the ASP World Tour by which competitors qualify to contest for the World Title.
The event is being conducted by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), the global governing body for the sport, which organizes the ASP World Tour. Over Twenty international surfing officials will attend the event.
Australian surfer Julion Wilson scored the events highest single wave score of a 9.5 along with the highest heat tally of 18.10 in his huge win over Kiron Jabour from Hawaii. Wilson received a wild card placement into this six-star rated ASP event from the sponsors Sri Lanka Airlines.
Arugam Bay, the picturesque beach in the East Coast was recently voted as Asia’s top surfing destination by Floating Asia.
