A total of 153 workers (64 Women and 89 Men) have been repatriated repatriated by the Malaysian government 4 days after World Refugee day. Many had been working in Malaysia illegally, without work permits.
According to UNHCR reports as of January 2009, there were 19 345 2225 refugees and asylum seekers from Indonesia who live in other countries.
In the last two years, the number of IDPs, refugees and asylum seekers has also risen sharply in Indonesia itself. According to UNHCR reports, this year there are around 4000 refugees and asylum seekers in Indonesia. This is largely due to the fact that many are stranded or captured by the Indonesian security forces in the territory of the sovereignty of the Indonesian Government. They come from countries that are hit crisis, such as Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Iraq and Myanmar.
The theme of this year's World Refugee Day was 'They have taken my home but they can’t take my future'. Refugees flee because of persecution and conflict. They have lost their homes and the things associated with it: family, friends, work, community, and culture. However, there is one thing that they can not lose, namely their future.
