Many thousands took to the streets of Taipei to protest against the recently-signed tariff-reduction EFCA deal with China.

The opposition Democratic People's Party (DPP) fear that reduced tariffs will flood Taiwan with cheap imports. They also fear that it will lead to closer political ties with China.

Labor unions, agricultural organizations and youth groups as well as many from the South of the island formed part of the rally, expected to be up to 100,000 people.

Many DPP politicians such as former premiers Frank Hsieh and Yu Shyi-kun spoke to the crowd.
