Libyans protest against the 1996 killing at Tripoli's Abu Salim prison of up to 1,200 political prisoners.
In 2001 and 2002 Libyan authorities began to inform some families with loved ones in Abu Salim that their family member had died, although the bodies were never returned.
In April 2004 Colonel Gaddafi publicly acknowledged that the killings had taken place.
